Ryanair Cabin Baggage Policy – What You’re Allowed (2025)

As of 2025, Ryanair’s standard ticket includes one small personal bag only. This must fit under the seat in front of you and measure no more than 40 x 20 x 25 cm.

If you want to bring a second or larger bag, you must:

  • Pay for Priority & 2 Cabin Bags, which allows a small bag plus one cabin bag up to 55 x 40 x 20 cm (max 10kg).

  • Or pay to check in a 10kg or 20kg bag, which goes in the hold.

Oversized Bag Fee at the Gate (correct as of 2025)

If you show up at the gate with:

  • A second bag without Priority boarding

  • A bag larger than your allowance

Then Ryanair will charge you a gate bag fee in order to board, which in 2025 is:

💰 Non-priority customers pay £/€46.00 - £/€60.00 when they bring their 10kg check-in bag to the gate

e.g. You have a paid for a 10kg check-in bag, but rather than checking it at the check-in desk, you decide to bring it to the gate.  

💰 Any customer pays £/€70.00 - £/€75.00 per large cabin bag sized bigger than 55x40x20cm 

e.g. You have paid for Priority + 2 bags. Your large cabin bag is found to be larger than 55x40x20cm at the gate.

This fee applies per item, and you’ll have to pay to have staff add it to the aircraft hold.

⚠️ You cannot refuse the charge at the gate and still fly. If you want to dispute it, you must pay first and reclaim it later.

How to Reclaim or Appeal a Ryanair Oversized Baggage Charge

If you were charged unfairly—for example, if your bag did fit the size limits or you had Priority but the app glitched—there is a two-step process to challenge the fee:

1. Submit a Complaint via the Ryanair App

  1. Go to the Ryanair app or website

  2. Login and navigate to “myRyanair Portal” > “Help / FAQs” > “Contact us” > “Queries/Feedback” > “Fees I was charged” > “Airport Fees” > “Gate bag” 

  3. Select the relevant flight and upload:

    • Your boarding pass

    • Photos of the bag at the gate in the sizer

    • Photos of the bag against a measuring tape (if possible)

    • Proof of fee payment 

Ryanair should respond within 28 days.
